Malaria Pf/Pv Antigen (RCT)

The Malaria Pf/Pv Antigen (RCT) is a rapid, qualitative test for the detection of Plasmodium falciparum (Pf) and Plasmodium vivax (Pv) antigens in human whole blood. Designed for in vitro diagnostic use, it provides reliable differentiation between Pf and Pv infections, supporting timely diagnosis and treatment in malaria-endemic regions.

Key Features

  • Differential detection of P. falciparum and P. vivax
  • Easy-to-use cassette format
  • Results available within 15–20 minutes
  • No equipment required
  • Room temperature storage (2–30°C)

Intended Use

This test is intended for the qualitative detection of HRP-II antigen of P. falciparum and LDH antigen of P. vivax in human blood. It is especially valuable in field settings, clinics, and diagnostic labs where rapid identification is critical.

Test Principle

The test uses a sandwich immunoassay format. Monoclonal antibodies against P. falciparum and P. vivax antigens are immobilised on the test strip. If the target antigens are present in the specimen, coloured lines form, indicating a positive result for either or both species.

Sample Type

  • Fresh whole blood collected via fingerstick or venepuncture
  • Anticoagulants: EDTA, heparin, or sodium citrate

Procedure

  1. Add 5 μL of whole blood into the sample well.
  2. Add 2 drops (approx. 60 μL) of buffer.
  3. Read results in 15–20 minutes (do not interpret after 30 minutes).

Result Interpretation

  • Line at Pf only: P. falciparum positive
  • Line at Pv only: P. vivax positive
  • Lines at both: Co-infection (Pf and Pv)
  • Control line only: Negative
  • No control line: Invalid test; repeat with a new cassette

Performance Characteristics

  • Sensitivity: 98.5% for P. falciparum, 97.9% for P. vivax
  • Specificity: >99%
  • No cross-reactivity with other parasitic infections

Storage & Stability

  • Store between 2°C and 30°C
  • Stable until expiry date on label
  • Do not freeze

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Malaria Pf/Pv Antigen RCT used for?

This rapid test detects Plasmodium falciparum and Plasmodium vivax antigens in whole blood, aiding in quick malaria diagnosis and species identification.

How accurate is the Malaria Pf/Pv Antigen RCT?

The test demonstrates over 98% sensitivity and >99% specificity based on performance evaluations detailed in the IFU.

Can I use capillary blood with this test?

Yes. Both fingerstick (capillary) and venepuncture (venous) samples are compatible with this test.

What if the control line does not appear?

A missing control line indicates an invalid result. You should repeat the test with a new cassette.

How do I store the Malaria Pf/Pv Antigen RCT kit?

Store the sealed kit at 2–30°C, away from direct sunlight or freezing conditions.
